Germiston Golf Club hosted the final Sunday #Series2 event of the Season as well as the final league game of the year on Sunday the 22 of November!
A field of 71 players gathered early to enjoy each others company as they prepared for their final 18 holes and also hope to qualify for the final Major of the Season, The Summer Cup at Glendower on Friday the 4th of December.
For the Top 3 players on the #Series2 standings the pressure was on to perform with only a handful of points between them, Randal Chetty headed into Germiston on 251 Individual Stableford points at and average of 35,86 only 7 shots ahead of 2nd place Lukie Jansen on 244 points, while Alan Louw rounded up the top 3 position on 236 points. With 8 of the 9 scores counting in the Series it meant that Randal couldn’t afford the luxury of his lowest round falling out as he had already missed the February round, and now aiming to surpass the 276 points which Lukie already had in the bag.
Robert Michael and Matthew Widdall stepped up in the closing holes of the Tournament to get themselves into contention, both looking to win their maiden league victory. Matthew playing of his 8 handicap managed to accumulate 17 points on his front nine, then conquered the back nine carding and exeptional 1 Eagle, 1 Birdie and 6 Pars to rake in 24 individual stableford points to finish his round on -5, shooting 3 over 75!
Robert Michael can stake claim to being one of the original Ducks, having played on the Duckhook Tour since its inception in 2014. Having come close on many occasion, was it to be his day this time around? Starting on the back nine he manages to make 18 points which included four 3 pointers and a tap in Birdie on the Par 3 – 18th hole. Robert continued his round on Even Par for the next 4 holes until the Par 5 – 5th curbed his progress carding a Triple Bogey to fall to +2 with 4 holes to play. Robert then clicked into an extra gear making his 2nd Birdie of his round on the Par 4 – 6th hole to earn 5 more points to jump into the Red numbers on -1! He followed that up with 4 points on the Par 3 – 7th to gain another 2 shot to move to -3 and within touching distance of his first Victory. Coming down the final Par 4 – 9th Robert now needed to make a Par to tie club house leader Matthew Widdall. That is exactly what he did, a Par on the Final hole of the league season for 4 points and a -5 (41 point) finish!
It would take the Duckhook Count back rule to separate the players, the November permutation seeing the player with the most points on the front nine being declared the winner… 24 points for Robert confirming his first Career Victory!
Randal Chetty and Lukie Jansen at this point playing a head to head match as they raced to the top of the Standings. Both struggled around the Germiston layout, both languishing outside the Top 40 and reaching the Final Par 3 – 18th on +11 and +8 respectively. It came down to Randal needing a Par to secure 277 points to pass Lukie by 1, a testament to the fair and close competition which the Duckhook League offers. After Randal’s Tee shot and chip to within a meter of the hole he was face with arguably one of the most nerve wreaking pressure putts he ever had to encounter… 1 meter for the Sunday #Series2 Title… Straight in the cup and the 1st #Series2 Champion!
With the Season Title Randal receiving a Weekend Away at Nkonyeni Golf Estate, Being named the Captain of the 2021 #Series2 Shootout Team and exemption to all the Majors in 2021.
Congratulations to all the Players who competed and contributed to a great Season.
