The Duckhook Thursday League took place at Dainfern Golf Estate on the 15th of October.
The penultimate round of the 2020 Season was crunch time for many of the players in contention for the Title. After 7 Rounds Ewald van Wyk teed it up with a 7 point lead on 213 I.S points looking to increase his lead over Jason Ivins, Mark Borrajeiro and Simon Meyer all tied in 2nd place on 207 points while Pieter Prinsloo completed the Top 5, a further 2 shots back on 205 pts.
54 Players gathered on a perfect summers morning to enjoy the challenge of the Par 72, Gary Player designed Parklands Course which features crossing the Jukskei River six times throughout the 18 hole layout.
Once the October Tournament was underway players took advantage of the good scoring conditions and quickly started moving into the red numbers. Neville Kurz playing off his 22 handicap started on the back nine and posted the halfway lead on -6 after accumulating 24 I.S points. A Par and 3 points on the Par 4 – 10th was followed with 4 point Pars on the Par 4 – 14th and Par 4 – 15th quickly moving Neville to -5 before a final 3 points on the Par 4 – 17th took him to -6. Unfortunately two consecutive zero pointers on the 1st and 2nd holes broke his momentum and he eventually completed his round on +1, 35 points.
Louis Hattingh (8) making his 2nd Duckhook League start, quickly took a liking to the Dainfern layout, making 6 Pars and 1 Birdie on the back nine with 3 point Pars on the Par 3 – 11th and Par 4 – 17th to go with his 3 point Birdie on the Par 5 – 13th to reach the halfway stage on -3 (21 points). Louis continued his momentum on the front nine, carding another 4 consecutive Pars with 3 pointers coming on the 1st, 3rd and 4th to catapult his score to -6! Louis dropped his first shot of the day on the Par 4 – 5th to move back to -5, but quickly made up for it with a Par on the Stroke 1, Par 4 – 7th to move back to -6. With Bogeys on the Par 5 – 8th and finishing Par 4 – 9th he regrettably relinquished the lead, to complete his Tournament on -4 (40 points).
Gideon Richter (7) fresh off his Victory on Sunday #Series1 at Glenvista, was hoping his golfing form would continue and that it did. Starting on the front nine, Gideon constructed a magnificent 9 holes carding 22 points to reach the halfway point on -4. His front nine included 7 Pars, a Birdie on the Par 5 – 8th and a solo Bogey on the Par 4 – 3rd to shoot a gross score of 36. A Double Bogey on the Par 4 – 10th and Bogey on the Par 3 – 11th temporarily dropped him back to -1 but he quickly got back on track carding Birdie on the Par 5 – 12th and Par on the 14th to claw back to -3 with 4 holes to play. Reaching the Par 4 – 17th and 2 shots behind then leader Louis Hattingh, Gideon made Par to move to -4. Handling the pressure he made a final Birdie on the Par 5 – 18th adding another 3 points to his score to leapfrog Louis to -5 (41 points) to take his 2nd Victory in two starts, bagging another 500 Player Ranking Points!
Thursday League Leader, Ewald van Wyk would not have the best outing on Dainfern finishing tied for 41st position after making 28 points while Simon Meyer had a great day on course carding -3 (39 points) to finish in a tie for 3rd to now move to the Top of the Standings pulling out a 4 point lead over Ewald!
The 2020 Thursday League comes down to the Final round of the Season on the 12th of November at Glenvista, Simon Meyer leading the pack on 246 I.S points with Ewald van Wyk on 242 points and Pieter Prinsloo a further 2 shots back on 240 points!
