The August Durban League event moved to Umdoni Golf Club for the 5th round for the shortened season.
The Durban Ducks gathered for and early morning Tee off on both the 1st and 10th Tees to take on the reasonable short 5560m layout. The morning wind added an extra challenge with gusts blowing around 30Km/h with overcast conditions.
With the players looking to earn as many Individual Stableford points after 18 holes to hopefully take the title, Marius Engelbrecht and Jack lamp took the early lead staying around even par with Tiaan Bekker and Darry Myers close on their heels. Reaching the halfway mark of the tournament Marius and Tiaan lead the field on Even Par with Jack at +1 and Darryn at +2. Tiaan Bekker started his back nine strong carding a Birdie on the Par 5 – 10th while Jack and Marius both found the hazard after missing the fairway to drop giving Tiaan breathing room. Tiaan continued his back nine with two consecutive Pars on the Par 4 – 11th and Par 3 – 12th to reach the 13th on -1 before an unfortunate Double Bogey on the Par 4 – 14th to drop back to Even Par. With the wind reaching almost 50km/hat the closing staging the scores continued to go in the wrong direction including leader Tiaan making 2 back to back 1 pointers on the 15th and 16th to drop back to +2. Tiaan would go on to card a final bogey to complete his round on +3.
Darryn Myers playing off his +2 handicap took the second place after an impressive 1 over round of 73! Starting on the back nine Darryn card 2 Birdies and 4 Pars to accumulate 16 points turning onto the now the front nine on +2. A Birdie on the Par 5 – 1st was followed 5 consecutive Pars reaching +3 with 3 holes to play. The wind also playing havoc Darryn made a bogey on the Par 3, 7th to dropto +4 where he would complete his round.
Congratulation to Tiaan Bekker for claiming his 1at Durban League Event and earning an automatic qualifying spot for the Masters at the end of the Season.
